President Joe Biden commemorated Memorial Day with the customary wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and is now giving remarks in honor of the deceased U.S. service members.
Memorial Day is close to the day that Beau Biden, the president's son, passed away.
Tomorrow will be eight years since we lost our son Beau, Mr. Biden said, adding that disease claimed his life rather than being killed in war.
On Memorial Day, he said, he feels "particularly sharp" about the loss of his son, but he also feels proud of him for serving.
Earlier, at the 155th National Memorial Day Observance, Mr. Biden was accompanied by first lady Jill Biden, vice president Kamala Harris, and Harris' husband, Douglas Emhoff.
The president paused in front of the wreath for a moment of reflection before bowing his head in supplication.
