Celtics thrive on 3s, beat Heat 110-97 in Game 5 to extend East finals

The Boston Celtics have faced elimination four times during this postseason without blinking.

Derrick White led the Celtics to a 110-97 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals on Thursday night. White finished with 24 points, including six 3-pointers.

Marcus Smart finished with five steals and 23 points. With 21 points each, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown helped the Celtics win their second straight game and cut Miami's series lead to 3-2.

The Celtics are halfway to becoming the first NBA team to win a series after falling behind 3-0.

Boston defeated the 76ers in the second round after surviving two elimination games. Teams that fell behind 3-0 in a series are 0-150 all-time.

Joe Mazzulla, coach of the Boston Celtics, said, "It just says that our backs are against the wall and we're sticking together and we're competing at a high level to give ourselves a chance."

The Heat will attempt once more to become the second No. 8 seed to make it to the NBA Finals under the current system, which dates back to 1984, in Game 6 on Saturday in Miami.
