Memorial Day's meaning celebrated in Rockland County

Rockland County's Memorial Day weekend began with a ceremony. New City's Friday celebration was covered by CBS2. 

On Memorial Day Weekend, Clarkstown honors America's freedom with patriotic anthems and a seven-gun salute.

"We're here this morning to honor heroes, to remember their accomplishments, courage, and dedication, and to say thank you for their service and sacrifice."

All important conflicts of the last 80 years are commemorated with wreaths. included 20 years ago's Iraq war. 

Rockland County resident and Marine veteran Damien Shea served 15 months overseas.

Above all, to repay our responsibility as Americans, we must not simply commemorate the fallen.

"But it is our responsibility to teach the youth that nothing comes without cost, and sacrifices are meaningless without remembrance."

Five brothers served in the military, including Damien Shea. Denis Shea is their proud father.
