Photo Shoot: Memorial Day photo traditions

On Cape Cod, Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer travel season, which is bookended by Labor Day in September.

Friday afternoon sees the start of the Memorial Day photo department traditions with a picture of approaching traffic over the Sagamore Bridge.

The Figawi sailboat race to Nantucket will be covered on Saturday, followed by a dash to the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne to decorate all the graves with flags.

Memorial Day Monday will feature a number of parades and observances throughout the Cape.

Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day before it became a three-day weekend.

The term was first used in the 1860s by organizations from both the North and the South to adorn the graves of Civil War soldiers.
